ARMs, also known as selective androgen receptor modulators, are a novel drug class associated with androgen receptor ligands. SARMs and anabolic steroids both have similar actions and anabolic properties, but due to the greater specificity of SARMs, they are considered a much better choice than other anabolic drugs.

With the efforts of researchers at ligand pharmaceuticals and the University of Tennessee, the primitive footings of the nonsteroidal SARMs were developed. Since then, several SARM pharmacophores structural categories have been explored: bicyclic hydantoin (BMS), aryl propionamide (GTX, Inc.), quinolinones (Ligand Pharmaceuticals), tetrahydroquinoline analogues, aniline, diaryl aniline, and bezoxazepinones derivatives (GSK).

Ligandrol (LGD 4033):
